With user-friendly applications, over a million of images and fonts, and comprehensive free package, you simply can’t go wrong with Canva.

Getting Started

Go to Canva’s homepage and create a free account. You can do so using your email, Gmail, or Facebook.

Once you have created your account, you are able to start creating immediately.

However, there is a lot you can do with Canva, so don’t feel overwhelmed.

Rather than creating your own design from scratch, it’s probabaly best to start with a template from Canva.

As seen in the image above, Canva offers a vast array of preformatted tmeplates. Just under the social media catergory, you can create imahes preformatted to fit the ideal dimenssions of an Instagram story, Facebook post, Twitter Post Pinterest Graphic and more!

For the purposes of this guide, click on Blog Banner (this will allow you to create a large landscape oriented featured image for your blog post).

Once you select Blog Banner, you will see a blank canvas with several design templates on the left of your screen. Click on the template icon from the menu if this is not already selected:

Creating Your Blog Banner (Featured Image for Blog Post)

Now that you have created a Canva account, selected the Blog Banner option, and clicked on templates, you can begin creating you custom blog post image.

Select a template from the scrolling options on the left. For the purposes of this example, I’ll select the first option which contains a white desk background and says “Blog Post” in bold capital letters:

Once you select a template, Canva will automatically fill the blank design screen with the template of your choosing:

Now that you are editing a template, you can customize the layout, design, and formatting of your blog post image by clicking on any element.

Canva Pro vs. Free Version

One of the typical drawbacks of a tool like Canva, is that they are expensive. Canva is free and offers many custom features for free. There is a pro version of Canva, but unless you are producing graphics professionally or collaborating with a team, I would suggest utilizing the free version.

Once you become familiar with using Canva, you will likely look for new templates and designs. Luckily, there are custom templates available from third party sellers. However, some of these can be quite expensive.

That is why I created Canva Design, a newsletter, which sends out both free and premium custom Canva templates directly to your email.

Get 50% off for 1 year
As an introductory offer, I am offering a 50% discount on premium plans. That means that you get access to a range of custom design templates, for only $2.50 per month or $15 per year!

This is an absolute steal!

If you have looked for editable Canva templates before, you have seen how expensive just a few images can be:

Take advantage of this limited time offer and get custom Canva templates that are easily editable.

These templates will:

Make your blog posts look more professional

Make your blog posts more visually appealing, allowing you to share them on various social media platforms (such as Pinterest) without having to create separate custom images.
Ensure that your content indexes higher in Google. Google heavily prefers custom images. Using a generic stock image does not help your story stand out and it does not help it rank in Google.
